Figures suggesting more adults than ever before are participating in sport have been welcomed by Wrexham Assembly Member Lesley Griffiths.
Sport Wales has revealed the numbers of Welsh adults regularly taking part in sport or physical activity has reached record highs.
The Active Adults Survey found there has been a 34% increase between 2008 and 2012.
This equates to around 262,000 more people aged between 15 and 65 taking part in some form of sport or activity three or more times a week.
Furthermore, the clear link between sport and improved health could potentially lead to a £53m saving each year to the Welsh NHS.
Swimming, running and cycling has seen the most significant increases in participation while the amount of people playing football and golf has also steadily increased.
Since 2008, the number of adults in Wrexham regularly taking part in sport or physical activity rose 33%, just very slightly below the national average.
Wrexham AM Griffiths said:
“These figures are certainly very pleasing and in stark contrast to the rest of the UK.”
“The results are testament to all the hard work various partners have put in to develop their approach to sport and encourage more people to get involved.”
“Although there is always more work to be done, hopefully these positive results will inspire even more people to take part in sport and live healthier lifestyles, both in Wrexham and across Wales.”
