Developing young people’s interests in science and technology is an investment in the future, Wrexham MP Ian Lucas has said.
He was speaking before attending an event at Glyndwr University, to be held on Wednesday, aimed at inspiring young people aged 12-13 years and their teachers to take an interest in the world of science, engineering and technology.
The TeenTech experience will give the students the chance to try experiments, use cutting edge devices and to meet with engineers, technologists and scientists. It is aimed at dispelling myths about science, technology and engineering subjects as being “boring” or “geeky.”
A wide range of local and national companies will be taking part, such as Airbus, TATA, JVC, Toyota, Active Robots, Lego and the National Grid.
Mr Lucas said: “the worlds of science, technology and engineering play a vital role in shaping the world and in helping our young people secure highly-skilled, well-paid jobs. Making sure that young people know how interesting these subjects can be is an investment in the future and I am delighted that Glyndwr University and local companies have come together to stage this event.
“Developing young people’s interest in these subjects doesn’t just benefit them, however – as Labour leader Ed Miliband saw during his visit to Airbus in Broughton on Friday, our leading companies, and from them, our regional economy, all ultimately benefit.”
