Assembly member Ken Skates has welcomed news that work which is expected to kick-start a major restoration project will soon get under way.
Ken, the Labour AM for Clwyd South, has received confirmation from Welsh Government Transport Minister Edwina Hart that the construction of the long-awaited spine road through the derelict Brymbo steelworks site is inching ever closer.
He said: “I understand the final discussions between the developer and the council are ongoing but will conclude any day now, and it is anticipated that work will start very soon. It’s great news. I have been a huge supporter of this fantastic project since before I was elected, and I welcome the latest positive update from the Welsh Government.”
Around £43,000 of Welsh Government money awarded to the Brymbo Heritage Group funded emergency work to save run-down buildings at the site, which closed in 1990, from demolition. The scheme is aiming to create a visitor attraction, commercial centre and study base, which the group believes will breathe new life into the important local heritage area.
The proposed Brymbo Heritage Area forms the north-western tip of the former steelworks. An application for housing at the southern end was approved by Wrexham County Borough Council in September, with the aim that money from the sale of the first phase of homes will release cash for landowners Brymbo Developments Ltd to build the spine road through the site – which is crucial in getting the project up and running.
Mr Skates added: I’m delighted that continued Welsh Government support has helped the project progress to this stage, and it’s great to see the plans really taking shape. I will continue to work with the group to explore all possible funding options, as I have for a long time felt that these exciting plans will galvanise and bring real economic benefits to the area.”
