A nationwide food collection gets underway later this week and local Assembly Member Lesley Griffiths is supporting the cause and encouraging Wrexham residents to donate.
Tesco, in conjunction with the Trussell Trust and FareShare, will be holding their fourth National Food Collection between Thursday 3 July and Saturday 5 July, with collections taking place at every store across the country.
Tesco’s last collection, held in December, was a fantastic success. The combination of customers generosity, hardworking members of staff and the company’s 30% top up donation meant 4.3 million meals were provided in total for those in need.
Since holding their first Food Collection in December 2012, Tesco has donated 10.3 million meals to FareShare and the Trussell Trust to help feed people in need across the UK.
Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. In 2013-14 foodbanks fed over 913,000 people nationwide.
Lesley Griffiths AM will be visiting Tesco Extra in Wrexham to show her support for the Food Collection and said:
“From Thursday 3 July to Saturday 5 July, volunteers will be in stores greeting Tesco customers, offering them a ‘foodbank shopping list’ and asking them to purchase an extra, non-perishable item with their shop.”
“In recent times, demand for foodbanks has increased significantly and whilst it is disappointing they are becoming such an essential service, the general public’s response to the appeals is heartening and uplifting.”
“Every can counts and I urge Wrexham residents to donate an item this week and help make a positive difference to vulnerable people’s lives in our community.”
