Kate Lamb from Pentwyn in Cardiff was prosecuted on June 26 at Cardiff Magistrates Court for offences relating to the possession and sale of counterfeit goods.
Through an investigation carried out by Cardiff’s Trading Standards in June 2013, the accused pleased guilty in court to 6 offences of possessing counterfeit goods with a view to selling under the Trade Marks Act 1994. The illegal goods were being sold through a number of Facebook accounts.
The sentence by the Magistrate was to give a Community Order for 12 months, with an unpaid work requirement of 100 hours. In addition, she was ordered to attend a ‘Thinking Skills’ programme and ordered to pay costs of £200 and a victim surcharge of £60. In addition a forfeiture order was granted.
Councillor Bob Derbyshire, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Regulatory Services said,
“Counterfeiting is organised crime which connects to other criminality. Counterfeited goods are themselves often of inferior quality and can present a health and safety risk to consumers. The sale of counterfeit goods has a negative impact upon the legitimate local economy, which impacts on retailers and jobs. For these reasons, It is important that the council investigates and takes firm action in these cases.”
