WWF: New law for Future Generations should be a Real Benefit to Businesses in Wales

WWFWWF Cymru believes that the forthcoming Future Generations Bill could make a real difference to the health of the planet, whilst also securing and creating long term, sustainable jobs in Wales.

The Future Generations Bill, which will be published on Monday, 7th July, could, according to WWF Cymru, help deliver a One Planet Wales – a country where we use only our fair share of the earth’s resources so that we tackle problems like climate change and habitat loss.

WWF Cymru also believes that by putting sustainable development at the heart of government and public services through this law, the business community should feel confident that Wales is serious about creating a resource-efficient, low carbon economy, and that the support and investment will be there to help them succeed.

Anne Meikle, head of WWF Cymru said:

“The Future Generations Bill should help deliver a One Planet Wales –  a low carbon, resource-efficient country that uses its fair share of the earth’s resources, creating jobs and tackling poverty in a truly sustainable way.

“The first law of its kind in the UK, it should change the way government and public services work, so that all decisions are designed to benefit people and nature both today and in the long term.

“This will mean creating jobs in ways that help combat climate change and creating jobs that have a future, in businesses that are resilient in the face of increasing competition for natural resources.”

FSB Wales Head of External Affairs and Member of the Climate Change Commission Iestyn Davies said: “We believe that this Bill can make a positive difference to our communities, through supporting sustainable local businesses.

“We are keenly aware of the need to balance the three pillars of sustainability – economic, social and environmental – and believe that this Bill could go a long way towards striking a proper balance between those three.

“If we can get that balance right in the years to come it will help to create a sustainable business environment that will benefit the whole of Wales.”

One example of a thriving green business is Cenin Cement which is based at Stormy Down, Bridgend. It produces an innovative virtually carbon zero cement, and uses renewable energy generated on site to power its production.
