Monmouth Assembly Member Nick Ramsay is calling on the Welsh Government to do more to support people with Motor Neurone Disease (MND).
Opening the first debate specifically on MND at the Assembly last week, Mr Ramsay said it was vital to raise awareness of the disease and to understand some of the challenges facing people with MND.
“There are currently around 250 people in Wales living with this devastating disease, which sadly has no cure. It is therefore essential that people with MND and their carers have access to the right care, in the right place and at the right time.“
Mr Ramsay urged members to sign up to the five point MND Charter which sets out the rights of people with MND to an early diagnosis and information; to access quality care and treatment; to be treated as individuals with dignity and respect; to maximise their quality of life, and for carers of people with MND to have the right to be valued, respected, listened to and well supported.
“If we can get all 60 members to sign this charter, we can send a direct message to the rest of the UK that we are listening and are leading the way in recognising support for people with MND,” he said.
“We are only a small institution here in Wales but we have the power to lead the way.”
Mr Ramsay also made a special mention of the local MND Association branches across Wales.
“They are made up of volunteers who do a fantastic job of providing local support to people living with this heart-breaking disease,” he said.
