A record 70,000 people attended the Cardiff International Food and Drink Festival over the weekend attracted by the wide range of local and international producers, the live music and the glorious sunshine.
The huge volume of hungry visitors meant that a number of stalls including Devon Fishcakes, The Blaenafon Cheddar Co. and the Handmade Scotch Egg Co. sold out by the end of the weekend. Jonathan Williams from the The Pembrokeshire Beach Food Co. said it had been “a great weekend” with the award winning company selling over 400 lobsters.
Cabinet Member for Community Development, Co-operatives and Social Enterprise, Cllr Peter Bradbury, said: “What a weekend! The Food and Drink Festival is always popular, especially when the sun comes out, but this year’s event has been a real success. There’s so much happening in Cardiff during the Festival, Blysh is happening as we speak, Cardiff Bay Beach will be back soon, the Welsh Grand Prix of the Sea at the end of the month, in fact Cardiff is looking like the only place to be this summer.”
The scorching sunshine and high temperatures all added to the Spanish flavour of this year’s event which was supported for the first time by Vueling Airlines and Cardiff Airport.
Aviation and Business Development Director at Cardiff Airport, Spencer Birns, said: “It was great to be involved with this year’s Food and Drink festival which achieved a record number of attendees. There was a natural link to promote Vueling Airlines through the Cava and Sangria bar reminding visitors of the routes linking Spain and Wales.
Events of this kind are an excellent opportunity for Wales to showcase the best of Welsh produce and we look forward to welcoming even more international visitors to events in the future.”
