Cllr David Carter, Mayor of Caerphilly county borough, presents Samantha Roberts with her ILS Learner of the Year award
The achievements of adult learners in Risca have been celebrated at a special award ceremony.
The Independent Living Skills (ILS) department at Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Adult Education Centre, Oxford House, hosted an awards ceremony at the Top Club last month.
Friends, carers and parents came along to the event to celebrate the achievements of learners over the last academic year. Learners received Agored Cymru and City & Guild certificates for a number of different subjects, while special awards were presented to those who had worked particularly hard over the course of the year.
Cllr David Carter, Mayor of Caerphilly county borough presented the ILS Adult Learner of the Year award to Samantha Roberts for her exceptional improvement in Independent Living Skills.
Lyn Travis, Senior Community Education Manager, said: “Samantha is a true inspiration and a living embodiment of what heights can be scaled from such depths when learning comes into your life.”
Cllr Hazel Dupre, Risca Town Council Mayor, presented the Graham Hedditch award to Gethin House. The award recognises a learner who has had to overcome many hurdles and difficulties through the year.
The Donald Rees award for the student who has proved most helpful and supportive was presented to Zoe Wise, who has provided support to students and peers throughout the academic year.
The ILS Peer Mentoring Group were the recipients of the Group award in recognition of their devotion to their role as mentors and supporters of their peers.
Cllr David Carter, Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough Council, said: “I was delighted to be able to attend this event and celebrate the achievements of learners at Oxford House. It is terrific to see so many people taking advantage of the courses on offer and using them to gain new knowledge and skills. There is no doubt that the work carried out at our Adult Education Centres is making a real difference to the lives of our residents.”
