Pupils and teachers at Ysgol Borthyn, Ruthin are saying a fond farewell to their Headteacher Mr Neil Roberts this week.
Mr Roberts arrived in Ysgol Borthyn 26 years ago as one of the youngest headteachers in the area. He worked in Borthyn in 1973 as the last school practice from Bangor before qualifying to become a teacher. He never thought that he would return as Head of the school.
Mr Roberts said “I am very sad to be leaving the school after 26 very happy years. During my time here, I have tried to create a happy working environment for children, parents and staff alike and I have seen the school grow in that time. I have approached all changes positively and I would like to thank the unwavering support that I’ve had from my staff, parents, pupils and ex-pupils over the years. I would also like to thank the County Council for their support during my time here. It’s a truly inclusive school and I’ve been very lucky to have been part of it all.”
Karen Evans, Denbighshire’s Director of Education said: “He’s a real shining example of what being a Headteacher is all about. He is totally committed to the children and has always done the utmost for the school and the community. He has real integrity and as the Headteacher of a faith school, he really lives by the principles of the faith”.
Jean Cartwright, the Deputy Headteacher said: “Mr Roberts has been a real inspiration to everyone. He’s a people person with a genuine interest in everyone’s welfare and development, whether you’re a child, parent or ex-pupil. One of the staff told me the other day that Borthyn feels like part of their family, and this is all down to Mr Roberts and the nurturing that he does which comes naturally to him. I will be very sad to see him go.”
Mrs Cartwright will be the Acting Head until Christmas when Teleri Llwyd Jones takes over in the New Year.
Mr Roberts is married with two grown up sons. He hopes to have some time to himself to enjoy leisurely pastimes such as reading, listening to music and supporting Man Utd.
