Pupils at Connah’s Quay High School became painters and decorators for a day during a skills taster workshop.
The construction taster day was organised as part of a community initiative programme with Flintshire County Council’s Housing Asset Management Team, Communities First and Bell Group (BG), a company contracted to complete work on Flintshire County Council’s housing stock.
Designed to give pupils the opportunity and insight into painting, decorating and joinery as a career option, the workshop offered pupils the opportunity for practical involvement and advice including health and safety, tools and products, practical skills and career opportunities. Pupils from Year 10 learned some of the basic skills in painting and joinery whilst revamping a school classroom.
Clare Budden, Chief Officer, Community and Enterprise at Flintshire County Council said: “ Flintshire County Council are extremely pleased to be working with the Bell Group and Communities First, providing Community Benefit initiatives through its capital expenditure programme, whilst upgrading our housing stock up to the Welsh Housing Quality Standard (WHQS)”.
Councillor Helen Brown, Cabinet Member for Housing said: “These are really exciting times to provide opportunities to the wider community through our WHQS delivery programme and we thank Bell Group for providing those opportunities for our younger generation to have a taste of what the construction industry has to offer.”
Anna Higham. Community Investment Manager at Bell Group added: “We were really impressed with the speed and dedication shown by the participants and our Voluntary Work Experience Programme which involves two full weeks of onsite experience, has been offered to all pupils when they turn 16.”
