Wrexham’s foodbank use statistics show that people are really struggling, the town’s MP has said.
Wrexham MP Ian Lucas was speaking after meeting with staff at the Salvation Army, on Garden Road in the town, earlier today. Mr Lucas also took part in a foodbank session during his visit.
The foodbank opened in 2012 and, since its opening, Mr Lucas has raised the rise of foodbank use with Ministers in Parliament. After today’s visit, Mr Lucas said that figures he had seen which council wards foodbank users came from, showed that people were struggling right across Wrexham.
He said: “People do not just turn up to Wrexham’s foodbank – they are referred and a voucher system is run. Figures I saw today show that people are coming to the foodbank from across Wrexham – and in large numbers.
“A resource that did not exist two years ago is now helping to feed people right across Wrexham. That shows that people really are struggling, and it is clear that something really has gone wrong when so many need help.
“Many of the figures show that people are being hard hit by late payment of benefits. I know from my own work that many of these people have done nothing wrong – yet they are going hungry because of the failure of the Department for Work and Pensions.”
