The Archbishop of Wales has paid tribute to a retired Welsh bishop who died last week.
Bishop Cledan Mears, a former Bishop of Bangor, died after a short illness on July 13. His funeral will be taken by the Archbishop, Dr Barry Morgan, at Eglwys Dewi Sant, Cardiff, on July 30 at 1.45pm followed by a Committal at 3.30pm at Thornhill Crematorium, Cardiff.
Bishop Cledan Mears served as Bishop of Bangor for 10 years before his retirement in 1992. He had begun his ministry in the Diocese of St Asaph, before a period lecturing in theology at Cardiff University and acting as Sub-Warden of St Michael’s College. He was then Vicar of Gabalfa, Cardiff, before becoming Bishop of Bangor.
The Archbishop said, “Bishop Cledan was an inspired preacher and teacher who wore his learning lightly. He did not stand on ceremony and, as someone said of him, he preferred people looked him in the eye, rather than up to him.
“He himself cared for the clergy in an exemplary way and put great emphasis on visiting. He was a humble man and, with his late wife, Enid, was very hospitable. After his retirement, he made his home in Cardiff and joined the choir at Eglwys Dewi Sant. We hold Bishop Cledan, and his children, Wyn and Eleri, in our prayers at this time.”
