Sign of the Times for Cathays, Plasnewydd and Adamsdown

Waymarkers have been installed at eleven different locations to point residents in the direction of community assets including Sherman Cymru, The Gate Arts Centre, Shelley Gardens and Cathays Library. The signs all give distances in walking times to encourage residents to connect with their local area and encourage active travel.

Cabinet Member for Transport, Planning and Sustainability, Ramesh Patel, said: “This new signage will help make Cathays, Plasnewydd and Adamsdown much easier to navigate by foot and is a good example of how we are working together with communities to eventually reach our goal of making Cardiff Europe’s most liveable capital city.”

The scheme came about as a result of consultation meetings held by Cynefin Cardiff, a Welsh Government funded project, managed and co-ordinated by Severn Wye Energy Agency which works in partnership with City of Cardiff Council to develop new processes for supporting people in local places and to engage them in effective policy making to improve sustainability in their areas.

On the back of these public meetings a workshop was held to allow residents to vote on the design of the sign, to highlight the assets they want to see ‘waymarked’ and suggest where the signage should be installed.

The scheme has also contributed to making the streets less cluttered, with eighteen redundant signs being removed.
