Chris Elmore at the launch of scheme
A scheme designed to improve co-operation and foster a strong community spirit between the older and younger generation in Wick has been celebrated and pointed out as a “leading example of communities coming together”.
Coun Chris Elmore, the Vale’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services who launched the new scheme, entitled ‘Wick Across the Ages’ said: “This is the sort of initiative which builds strong, cohesive and resilient communities.
“All too often, there are tensions between the older residents of an area and local young people. Neither have anything to fear from the other and this sort of scheme which will see young and old interact and enjoy each others company will do a lot to
“This project has been very much led by the young people involved and I congratulate them for their inspiring work but I also need to pay tribute to Conway Hawkins and Rebecca Rees who run the Wick Youth Club for their on-going dedication which has made this innovative scheme possible”.
Local youth club users Michael Walsh, Tal Brown, Marybeth Eddy and Alex Thomas successfully bid to the Starbucks Youth Action Scheme for funding to facilitate the scheme.
Joint activities between the youth club and Wick Pensioners are being organised and include a summer trip to Cardiff Bay, computer workshops, a Halloween Tea and a Christmas Meal together.
