The Learning Dome
A university is preparing to launch a mock space mission to sharpen students’ STEM skills through technology.
Glyndŵr University in Wrexham will host workshops, activities and interactive challenges as part of the ‘Tech Teach’ event on Friday May 22.
Led by Nathan Roberts, a senior lecturer in Computing, the programme will be held at the Catrin Finch Centre and include a presentation by Stuart Ayres, pioneer of AnyWorld, which produces immersive high-tech environments and story-games for education, entertainment and enterprise.
Incorporating Oculus Rift technology, the innovative immersive environment – or learning dome – and programming with Lego robots and leap motion, the purpose of the day is to encourage visitors to sample the work of students and provide feedback.
One of the highlights of the exercise is sure to be ‘Adrenaline Rush’, a showcase of work connecting virtual rollercoasters and computer games.
“The principal aim of the day is education, of course,” said Nathan.
“But it’s also about fun and enjoyment, about developing STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) skills using games, robotics and technology, giving them scenarios to face and issues to resolve.”
He added: “One of the themes on the day will be a space mission; the students will play the crew and have to solve the problems that come their way using maths, science and the skills they’ve developed over the course of their degrees.”
Glyndŵr University is working in collaboration with Coleg Cambria, Techniquest Glyndwr and external stakeholders who will be in attendance, as well as the NHS and different subject areas at the university.
Applicants from past open days and college and high school pupils are also set to visit the campus to witness the world-leading Computing team at work.
“It is set to be a fascinating event, bringing together our partners, current students and prospective students who will be keen to see how the university operates,” said Nathan.
“The importance of teaching STEM subjects through teamwork, technology and fun is important to us here at Glyndŵr and we will display that on the day.”
