The arrival of Malaysian engineers in Wrexham is a “significant moment” for Glyndŵr University.
The group joined the University from Kuala Lumpur this week as part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government agency Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA).
Interim Vice-Chancellor, Professor Graham Upton, was delighted to welcome them to the University, where they will study for the MSc Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering postgraduate degree.
“The arrival of these students is a significant moment for Glyndŵr University,” he said.
“I would like to welcome them to Wrexham and hope they enjoy their time here with us.”
The students will work closely with industry – notably partners BAE Systems, MBDA defence group and aerospace giant, Airbus – and be integrated into the community, blending in with current students to enrich their experience to create “well-rounded” individuals combining academic and technical excellence with cultural and social elements of university life.
Glyndŵr University signed the MoU with Asia Aerospace City (AAC) – an economic and educational hub created by M-AeroTech for MARA – at last summer’s Farnborough International Airshow.
The two organisations met again recently to discuss the agreement at the LIMA (Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace) exhibition in Malaysia, coinciding with the graduation of 17 MARA-sponsored students at Glyndŵr, who completed the MSc Composites.
More MARA students are applying to study engineering programmes and would start in September.
Suzanne Riley, Head of International Business Relations and Fundraising, said: “This partnership is of huge significance and importance to Glyndŵr University and MARA.
“Mara has joined forces with us because we will deliver top-class engineers with industry-relevant expertise who will have the technical knowledge, practical ability, social skills and cultural awareness to fit into any organisation going forward.
“They are the graduates of the future who will be sought after by the industry sector, not only in Malaysia but around the world.
“The next full year of study will be extremely intense, but the students who have been selected are the elite and will have our total support.”
She added: “I would like to join Professor Upton in welcoming them to Wrexham.”
