Local community organisations and groups are being encouraged to apply for Heritage Lottery Fund grants following a presentation at the National Assembly for Wales.
Suzy Davies AM, the Shadow Minister for Heritage, attended the presentation and has called on local groups to take advantage of the funding being made available to help communities mark the centenary of the First World War.
Heritage Lottery Fund have made an extra £4 million available and groups can apply for grants of between £3,000 and £10,000 to help conserve and share local heritage from World War I.
Mrs Davies said: “This is a great opportunity for people to learn more about how their communities played a part during the war, and the impact that it had on the area.
“I have seen a few examples of projects that have been run so far. They include a project to explore the role that women played during the First World War, while another looked at how miners used and adapted their skills to help during the conflict.”
Mrs Davies, the Welsh Conservative AM for South Wales West, had herself hosted a workshop with Heritage Lottery Fund.
She said “The application process is a lot simpler than a lot of people would think.
“Heritage Lottery Fund are there on hand to help people make their applications and to guide them through the process.
“If anyone has a project that they think would commemorate the First World War and also help people learn more about the personal stories involved, I would encourage then to look into the Heritage Lottery Fund in more detail.”
