The University Dental Hospital in Cardiff has recently installed hearing loop systems in all its reception areas, making it easier for those with hearing impairments to communicate efficiently and confidentially.
A hearing loop is a special type of sound system for use by people with hearing aids.
The hearing loop provides a magnetic, wireless signal that is picked up by the hearing aid when it is set to ‘T’ (Telecoil) setting which cuts out background noise allowing sound to go straight into the hearing aid.
In addition to the hearing loop systems, a number of portable Sonido personal listeners are also available for hearing aid and non hearing aid wearers to use throughout the dental hospital. The Sonido personal listener acts like an amplifier and is designed to help people hear conversations and other sounds more clearly.
Action on Hearing Loss visited the Dental Hospital and held a number of workshops to train staff on how to use this essential equipment, which will help staff to provide a first class service to patients, their families and carers.
Hayley Dixon, Director of Operations for the Dental Clinical Board said: “The Dental Hospital has taken another step forward in providing equality of service to all.
“We hope by installing the hearing loop systems and providing personal listening devices for patients, their families and carers, it shows that we are trying to improve not only our service, but also the way in which our services are delivered.”
