A housing association is carrying out a £2.75 million project to transform a big housing estate in Llandudno.
The Cartrefi Conwy scheme involves major refurbishments to the properties in the Tre Cwm area of the town along with environmental improvements.
The houses, flats and maisonettes which were built in the 1970s will be treated for damp problems and their outdoor areas and accesses transformed with landscaping.
The project brings the total spent by Cartrefi Conwy on its housing stock of 3,800 homes in Conwy to over £40 million with more than 300 jobs created as part of their ongoing housing improvement programme.
Gwynne Jones, Managing Director of Cartrefi Conwy, said: “We are well advanced with the project with the works aimed at eradicating problems of damp due to be finished by March.
“These properties were built in the 1970s and they have developed issues with damp on west-facing external walls because the original insulation and rendering has deteriorated.
“The work is ongoing and we have consulted with our tenants throughout and have offered them a choice of colour of finish with the external rendering.”
The works have involved the original cavity wall insulation being replaced and the west-facing walls re-rendered.
Work on more than 80 properties on Tre Cwm has been completed while two blocks of maisonettes on Lon Cymru have had the roof replaced and all walls have had external wall insulation and rendered
Specialist contractors have now moved onto the two blocks of Parc Bodnant apartments near Llandudno rugby ground where £1.5 million is being spent on improvements to the housing and the environment.
Gwynne Jones said: “As well as new windows and upgrading some boilers, Parc Bodnant flats will be having a new roof and new windows and will be completely fitted with external wall insulation as part of a very large environmental project which will improve the communal areas and the tenant accesses.
“We have worked with the residents of the Tre Cwm area over the past 12 months to develop these plans and are in the process of carrying out improvements to enhance the appearance of their homes and ensure that they are brought up to standard.
“There have been issues with the design of the original buildings but we are working through those and are on schedule to complete the regeneration of the area in the spring.”
Cartrefi Conwy Group Chief Executive Andrew Bowden said: “This is a significant investment here and by carrying out this renovation and environmental works we will provide our residents with homes to be proud of and surroundings to enjoy.
“We are modelling our approach on the work we carried out at Parc Peulwys in Llysfaen which has been transformed and is now winning awards and that is something we hope to repeat at Tre Cwm.”
