A car park attendant in Tenby has been named an Unsung Hero by Pembrokeshire County Council.
Barbara Powrie was nominated by pensioner Joan Webb of Saundersfoot.
Joan, 84, injured herself when she fell in the Salterns car park in Tenby in August of last year.
Barbara took her first to Tenby hospital and then to Withybush General Hospital in Haverfordwest where she stayed with Joan for several hours while she saw a doctor.
She also bought Joan sandwiches while she waited for treatment and then drove her home.
‘I don’t know what I would have done had she not been with me’ wrote Joan in nominating Barbara. ‘I cannot thank nor praise her enough for her compassion and kindness, particularly, as I understand she receives no overtime pay for such work.
‘My husband wanted to send her some flowers, but she would have none of it and wouldn’t tell us where to send them! If anyone deserves the Unsung Hero award it is Barbara, and I shall always be grateful to her.’
Barbara was presented with a framed certificate and a Pembrokeshire Produce Direct hamper from David Thomas, the Council’s Head of Marketing and Communications.
The award – now in its sixth year – is presented to an individual Council employee who has demonstrated extraordinary commitment in the delivery of first class customer service.
There were 39 nominations for the 2009 award and for the first time it included nominations from members of the public.
Just missing out on the top prize were three runners-up who were all highly commended.
They were Pembroke street cleaner Andrew Whitacker, toilet cleaner Bill O’Leary – who cleans 11 public conveniences between St Davids and Little Haven – and accommodation officer Angela Malkin who works in the Council’s hostel for homeless people in Riverside, Pembroke.
Mr Thomas said that all of them had “gone the extra mile” to provide exceptional service to customers.
