An innovative road safety scheme which aims to educate motorcyclists about the dangers they face on the roads has held its first workshop in Gwynedd
The first practical workshop was recently held in Porthmadog as part of the BikeSafe initiative which is run by North Wales Police’s BikeSafe coordinator with the support of Gwynedd Council and other partners.
Councillor Gareth Roberts, Gwynedd Council’s Senior Portfolio for the Environment said:
“It is good to see Gwynedd Council and the road safety team taking a prominent role in this innovative project, as they work together with experts in the field to offer practical road safety advice to motorcyclists.
“We are very pleased that a number of motorcyclists attended the first course. Our aim is to offer advice and practical experience with experts in the field of road safety, and working to encourage motorcyclists to be more aware of the possible problems they face on the road.”
BikeSafe offers a range of training opportunities for motorcyclists of varied abilities. Through the initiative, local workshops will be help motorcyclists to reduce risks as well as ride outs with expert motorcycling observers.
Colin Jones, Gwynedd Council’s Road Safety Manager added:
“Statistics show that you are 45 times more likely to be killed riding a motorcycle in Wales than in a car. With that in mind, the BikeSafe scheme aims to offer practical advice for motorcyclists by trying to make them more aware of the dangers facing them on the road.
“The first workshop was very successful, with motorcyclists from all over the county attending. There was positive feedback from the motorcyclists and we are looking forward to the next workshops which will be held later in the year. Our aim is to work with the motorcycling community in Gwynedd to reduce the number of road traffic collisions which involve motorcycles.”
