Young Consumer of the Year Competition 2010

Cardiff Trading Standards Service has hosted a competition to see who will go forward to represent the city at the Welsh Regional Final of the Young Consumer of the Year 2010.

Ten teams of young people from secondary schools across Cardiff competed for the title Cardiff Young Consumers of the Year 2010 at City Hall.

After a very close and exciting competition involving three heats and a final, the winning team were Bishop of Llandaff High School who will now go forward to represent Cardiff at the Welsh Regional Final of the Young Consumer of the Year competition to be held in Llandrindod Wells in March.

Teams from Ysgol Hen Felin – Rhondda Cynon Taff and Woodlands High School – Cardiff also competed in a separate Consumer Challenge Quiz competition for Special Needs Schools.  Pupils from Ysgol Hen Felin were the winners and will attend the UK final in June which will be held in Edinburgh.

‘Young Consumer of the Year’ is a unique annual competition co-ordinated nationally by the Trading Standards Institute and organised locally by the Trading Standards Services. The aim of the competition is to educate 14 to 18-year-olds in a wide range of consumer related issues to enable them to become more informed and confident consumers.

The competition invites teams of four young people to compete in a knockout quiz which tests them on a range of consumer issues including:

  • Consumer Affairs
  • Money and Finance
  • Food and Drink
  • Safety and the Environment
  • Europe and Travel
  • Credit

Hundreds of schools from across the UK rise to this challenge each year to become the nation’s top young consumers.

Councillor Judith Woodman, Cardiff Council Deputy Leader said: “The Trading Standards Service in Cardiff is committed to protecting and educating consumers about many issues which affect young people such as under-age sales, counterfeit goods and financial literacy.

“The Young Consumer Competition is an important annual event which makes the competitors aware of their responsibilities and rights as consumers and it is good to be able to support a positive initiative in a fun and engaging way.  This year we welcomed more local secondary schools and two Special Needs Schools to the event.  We hope many more schools take part in the competition next year so it can become even more successful.”

This year the competition received support from a number of local organisations who provided sponsorship and prizes to make the event a success including  Careers Wales, Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer, Red Dragon Centre tenants, Boulders and Cardiff International Pool.
