School children are being taught about the dangers they face in every day life, through a college production.
For the fifth year in succession the students at Coleg Llandrillo will be performing the “Safety Crew” to over 3,000 children in schools throughout the county of Conwy.
By interacting with the children through songs and original scripts, the characters, including Dr Hazard and Trickster, demonstrate issues about bullying, road safety, “Net” nastys, as well as highlighting the dangers of playing with fire.
The general message is “Keep safe, be careful, and respect yourself and others.”
The first performance was staged at the college theatre, in front of pupils’ from Ysgol Glanwydden, as well as dignitaries including Henry Robertson, the High Sheriff of Clwyd; Lord Barry Jones and Lady Janet Jones.
The High Sheriff said: “This is all about disciplines. There will always be nasty people in the world and something has to be done to make children aware. With this professional production these young people are doing good work for their community.”
Jaqueline Owen, course leader for the Performing Arts at the college explained that the brand new production was done by the devising unit as part of the second year students BTEC National Diploma assessment.
“The students have written all the music, the lyrics and the script and they have had to adapt it to the style of a theatre in education company, where they have produced the set and put it up in the schools,” said Jaqueline.
Praising the students for their efforts Ifan Hughes, Central Community Safety Officer for North Wales Police said: “The performance is fantastic.
The Safety Crew have received support from Conwy’s Road Safety department as well as from PACT, North Wales Fire and Rescue and the Community Safety Partnership Service.
