Extra carriages laid on for soccer fans travelling home from Swansea

Extra carriages are being laid on to take fans home to Cardiff after the Wales-Sweden international in Swansea next month following an appeal from Plaid Cymru AM Chris Franks.

Chris Franks, who represents South Wales Central, wrote to Arriva Trains Wales after a constituent complained that fans leaving the Liberty Stadium at 9.30pm after the international would only have one train available to them.

He stressed that the Welsh Assembly Government was encouraging people to use public transport and wanted to know whether the train company had any plans to increase evening frequency between Wales’ two biggest cities, particularly when events took place in Cardiff and Swansea.

In a letter Mike Bagshaw, Commercial Director of Arriva Trains Wales, said: “We have reviewed the likely demand for rail services to and from the game based on our experience of catering for similar games at the Liberty Stadium.

“We, therefore, plan to provide additional carriages on the last train back from Swansea to Cardiff which leaves at 10.30pm. Before the game there is already a frequent service from Cardiff to Swansea which, we believe, will be more than the adequate in accommodating the anticipated demand.

“We will, of course, keep this under review and monitor the usage of the rail services on the day.”

Chris Franks said: “I am pleased that Arriva Wales have acted to lay on additional carriages and Plaid hopes that this will be repeated at future events in the two cities. It is vital that good public transport operates between Cardiff and Swansea if we are to encourage people to leave their cars at home.

Plaid is very keen to improve transport. It is important that internationals are served by a decent train service.”
