Family of four rescued by the Moelfre RNLI inshore lifeboat crew

The Moelfre RNLI inshore lifeboat was launched yesterday (Tuesday 18th) to reports of three children and an adult being blown out to sea on two kayaks off Lligwy beach on Anglesey.

The father and his three children aged 6, 10 and 12, from Sheffield, were rapidly being blown out to sea in the strong South Westerly force 5 gusting force 7 winds and choppy sea.

The father had been trying to paddle back to the shore but was quickly becoming exhausted and all four were getting very cold, as they were not wearing the appropriate waterproof clothing.

The Moelfre RNLI Inshore Lifeboat arrived at the scene within five minutes of launching and promptly transferred the cold, distressed and very grateful family onto the RNLI Inshore Lifeboat where the volunteer Lifeboat crew checked everyone was medically okay and immediately started to warm the group up.

They then proceeded to tow both the Kayak’s into the beach where the Moelfre Coastguard team were waiting.

Dave Massey Moelfre RNLI Lifeboat Press officer said: ‘All the family were wearing buoyancy aids, and did exactly the right thing by staying with their kayaks and not trying to swim ashore. They were extremely cold and distressed when we got to the scene and the appropriate treatment was carried out by the First Aid trained RNLI inshore Lifeboat crew. They were located half a mile off the coat.’

Moelfre RNLI lifeboat station has been operating since 1830. To learn more about the lifeboat station visit www.moelfrelifeboat.co.uk
