Morrisons Submit Plans for Store in Wrexham

Supermarket giant Morrisons have applied for planning permission to open a retail store and petrol station in Wrexham.

If proposals are successful the venture will see £25 million invested in Wrexham and the creation of 350 jobs at the former Council Depot on Ruthin Road.

Cllr Alun Jenkins, Lead Member for Finance and Asset Management, said:

“The opportunity for new jobs in Wrexham is to be welcomed as is the potential for investment in our secondary schools programme. Morrisons’ are the third largest food retailer in the UK and the latest to invest in Wrexham demonstrating that confidence in Wrexham as a commercial destination continues to grow.

“Discussions have been concluded and subject to remaining issues being resolved which of course include planning approval, Morrison’s hope to develop the vacated site as a 78,000 sq feet retail superstore with petrol station.”

The former occupants of the land, Wrexham Council’s Environment Department relocated in 2009 to Abbey Road, on Wrexham’s Industrial Estate, following a council review of its buildings. The move has meant a more efficient and centralised Environment Department and the commercial impact of the vacated land for new development.

Cllr Jenkins added that

Wrexham Council are continuing with a cross departmental process of looking for efficiency savings and opportunities to reduce costs and make land and buildings in our ownership work to the best advantage in developing Wrexham.”
