This year’s festival will see more than 100 acts play indie, psychedelia, americana and folk across 5 stages, while DJ’s playing everything from psychedlia, dub-reggae, modern electro and stoner rock will keep the party alive right through the night.
There are also art installations, literature and film tents, Welsh poetry, art and music, ceilidhs, poetry, theatre, science, comedy, Nature and Nurture massage area, a daily dusk till dawn bonfire, impromptu jamming sessions, and the wonderful food stalls offering a wide range of mouth watering cuisine most of which is locally sourced and organic. More than enough to keep you stimulated…and we haven’t even mentioned the local cider served from an array of quirky bars dotted around the site with the only 24-hour drinks licences at a UK festival, serving everything from real ale, wine, hot toddies to cocktails. Whilst Einstein’s Garden, will introduce thought provoking green issues in a fun, informative way, and Little Folk, is a larger childrens area with even more workshops, entertainment and great stuff to do.
Green Man is held on the Glanusk Park estate in the Brecon Beacons, Wales. A private estate of rolling parkland featuring terraced lawns, walled gardens filled with lavender and roses, waterfalls and ponds, gothic and a stable courtyard, it is set against the stunning backdrop of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

Pop down to the Green Man’s local for a cheeky half this summer – it’s in a Grade II listed stables and the likes of The Aliens, Teenage Fanclub, Rough Trade Records, and The Local’s Howard Monk are manning the jukebox.
Where better to catch up with old friends and catch your breath for the rest of the day or night ahead than The Green Man Pub – situated slap bang in the middle of the breathtaking Glanusk Park site and a stoned throw from all the haywire happenings of this years festival?
A multifarious multitude of musical mischief is afoot across the weekend, with highlights including John Maclean (The Aliens/The Beta Band) spinning the psych/funk/soul platters that matter, Teenage Fanclub frontman Norman Blake sharing his favourite 45s, Rough Trade Records DJs rocking the rural rustic vibe, and Howard Monk who runs The Local – live music promotion agency par excellence – and sometimes has to dj at events in order to get in. He’s planning a decent run of 70’s rock/funk/soul for this slot. So expect a bit of Creedence. Of course.
The BPMs come courtesy of The Vinyl Vendetta Collective while Prof Justin Spear, of BBC 6Music’s Freakzone, unpacks a well-travelled rucksack packed full of French and Brazilian pop, pixie folk, trippy soundtracks and possibly some “heavy psyche shit” if the mood is right – which it will be.
When last orders roll around it’s a short stumble to the Far Out tent, where the Green Man kicks in after dark on Friday as DJhistory bring the warehouse party vibe to the Welsh countryside courtesy of dance legends Bill Brewster, Michael Cook and Frank Broughton and special guests The Idjut Boys, the kings of mashed-up rock-dub-disco.
Clear the decks on Saturday as two of Britain’s finest psychedelic minds, top DJ/producer Erol Alkan and musician Richard Norris – a.k.a. Beyond The Wizard’s Sleeve – embark on an epic mission to remix and “re-animate” some of the greatest songs of our times.
And speaking of wizardry, finish off the weekend in style on Sunday as Amorphous Androgynous (a.k.a. Future Sound Of London) play a much-anticipated live set and curate 11 hours of Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble audio visual mayhem.
Further off the beaten track all good things will come together at the legendary chill out café Chai Wallahs, who will be hosting their very own live stage for the first time ever this year. Soak up the positive vibes in the smoking area, sip on a brandy chai latte or get a natural high with some herbal shots and revel in hours of the finest World, blues, jazz, folk, hip hop and electronica coming at you through a sound system to blow your mind.
Let’s have a lock-in this summer at Green Man 2009.
CINEMA TENT LINE-UP
LIGHTS, CAMERA…ACTION! Follow the Green Man down to his new improved Film Tent this summer as he sets the reels a-rolling for a mind-blowing trip on the big screen.
FRIDAY – 7 Inch Cinema serve up a kaleidoscopic feast on Friday as the nature-loving and singularly eccentric British Sea Power – still breathless from their set on the main stage – perform a live soundtrack to the brilliant Man of Aran at midnight. A spectacular portrait of life in Ireland’s west coast fishing communities by acclaimed documentary maker Robert Flaherty, this leftfield collaboration is sure to be one of the highlights of Green Man 2009. Before that be sure to catch a suitably lunar line-up of sci-fi shorts and animations in Moon Dreams and a pre-midnight jamboree with the good ladies from Sugarfoot Stomp, before Birmingham’s pioneering purveyors of psychedelic psynema Outer Sight cook up a heady dose of late night treats until 3am.
SATURDAY – Top filmmaker Kieran Evans takes us on a journey of discovery on Saturday with a non-stop banquet of cutting-edge shorts, classic music documentaries and exclusive collaborations, not to mention a screening of his own acclaimed documentary Vashti Bunyan – >From Here To Before. Don’t miss the debut screening of ‘60s underground documentary Dope, promos from the mighty Bella Union label, a collection of films hand-picked by our friends from Fife’s Fence Collective and a trippy re-imagining of cult British horror classic The Wicker Man with live music from Stephen Cracknell and his Memory Band. Kieran rounds off the night by returning to the Summer Of Love with an early hours screening of Roger Corman’s cult 1967 classic The Trip.
SUNDAY – Grab yourself a cider on Sunday for an unmissable cinematic double header as Bad Film Club celebrate the guilty joy that is a terrible movie, recreating a living room atmosphere to revisit Jaws: The Revenge featuring a live DVD-style commentary.
Fans of the 80s are in for a treat with the screening of Made In Sheffield – a five-star documentary charting the birth of the post punk electronic pop scene in the steel city, complete with a live Q&A session with Stephen Singleton from ABC in a Green Man exclusive. Expect rare footage of The Human League, Cabaret Voltaire, and Heaven 17 and contributions fromPhil Oakey, Martyn Ware, the one-and-only Jarvis Cocker and one of the last interviews with the legendary John Peel.
Our good friends – Film Friends Forever, will be screening the BIFA award nomintated Three Miles North of Molkom, a Swedish documentary about the comic-come-karmic adventures of a “Sharing Group” who meet at Angsbacka; a 21st Century playground for adults. We are also showing the new and shocking Forgotten Bird of Paradise, it was shot undercover in West Papua and details the independence struggle of the Papuan people from Indonesian occupation.
ALL NEW CHAI WALLAH CHILL OUT STAGE – BEAUTIFUL TENT, GREAT NEW MUSIC AND BRANDY CHAI
Everyone’s favourite ethical chill-out café Chai Wallah loves the Green Man so much they’ve decided to stage their very own mini-festival in what promises to be a (relative) oasis of calm amid the madness, mischief and mayhem!
Soothe your addled mind with an unrivalled line-up of the very best in emerging dub, hip hop, blues, jazz, world, spoken word and folk music. Sample some herbal shots for a natural high, get the party rocking with 20,000 tunes from DJs The Diplomats of Sound or ahead for a satisfying smoke in the covered comfort of the Shisha Lounge.
COMEDY & LITERATURE LINE-UPS
When he’s not slurping cider, making mischief or head-banging in the front row, there’s nothing the Green Man likes better than a good old-fashioned belly laugh, a little food for thought and a decent film. Lucky for you then he’s lined up a rib-tickling array of award-winning comics, writers and cultural icons including Josie Long, Howard Marks and Jon Savage – especially for those in need of some time out from the music and mayhem of this summer’s festival.
COMEDY
One of Britain’s brightest comedy hopes, Josie Long won the BBC’s New Comedy Award at the tender age of 17 before being crowned Best Newcomer at Edinburgh in 2006. Ramshackle, rambling and hugely entertaining, she is sure to win over great hearts and minds alike at Green Man 2009.
Half Canadian, half Trinidadian Tony Law is one of the comedians’ favourite comedians, leaving audiences around the world in stitches with his ingenious brand of laid-back acid-casualty humour.
Elsewhere Radio 4’s musical mirth-maker Mitch Benn and Terry Saunders – comedy bible Chortle’s 2008 Breakthrough Act – head a glittering cast of more than 20 top comics including circuit regulars Ian Cognito, Howard Read and Liam Mullone that will leave your eyes streaming and jaw aching…
LITERATURE
Welsh dope fiend, drugs legalisation campaigner and all-round Mr Nice Guy Howard Marks holds court with a hatful of hedonistic tales from a life that has seen him amass 43 aliases, a 25-year prison sentence, some rather famous friends and two best-selling books.
Also not to be missed are missives from the frontline of popular culture with journalist and broadcaster Jon Savage – author of the seminal England’s Dreaming – post-punk pioneers Jah Wobble (Public Image Limited) and David Thomas (Pere Ubu), and industry insider Stephen Machat lifting the lid on the music biz with his no-holds-barred expose Gods, Gangsters & Monsters, published in August.
Plus there’s a Green Man Exclusive appearance from legendary producer Joe Boyd reading from his star-studded memoirs White Bicycles, an alternative tour of Britain with Guardian music journalist Will Hodgkinson, acclaimed novelist Jeremy Dyson (The League of Gentlemen) and many, many more treats yet to be announced.
Don’t miss a rare public appearance from Britain’s most exciting contemporary sci-fi writer Alastair Reynolds, who recently hit the headlines after signing an unprecedented £1m publishing deal. The acclaimed Wales-based author is the author of eight novels and numerous short stories, and does a “mean line in alien cultures and technology”.
KIDS AREA
Be it teen or tot, the Green Man is really just a big kid at heart – so he’s made sure there’s a little something for everyone at this year’s festival…even the little ‘uns
Are your little cherubs the Green Man stars of the future? Point them in the right direction with some expert musical tuition from some of the many professional musicians at the festival.
Let them try out their band, production and instrumental skills with our vast array of equipment to keep young minds inspired – maybe they could capture the fun with a helping hand from our two film-making crews teaching animation and documentary skills?
Discover that hidden hobby with workshops in bush craft, bike mechanics, jewellery, toy making and much, much more as well as extensive arts and crafts workshops with our Green Man experts using natural and recycled materials and plenty of play equipment!
This year the kids’ area has been moved to an even bigger space just a two-minute toddle from Family Camping to cram all these extra features – it couldn’t be handier!
Green Man’s love of food doesn’t just limit itself to the grownups. We’ve got a huge array of tasty treats for the youngsters and with on-site nutritionist to answer parents’ queries on nutrition, you can make sure your child is tucking in to the healthiest tucker possible.
Cwmdu Primary School’s legendary sausage and cake stall makes a welcome return, run by volunteer teachers and parents from the school serving up some classic camping grub sourced on the very ground where you’ve pitched your tent – if you see ‘em, do your bit to help out as this is the main fund raiser to support the school and local community.
Please don’t think you need to restrict yourself to the kids’ field – there are loads of other great fun family activities from thrilling experiments from the boffins from the Institute of Physics to wonders and mysteries of Einstein’s Garden where nature, magic, science, art and philosophy combine for some truly awe-inspiring educational entertainment.
