Fun football sessions are proving a hit with youngsters!
Over 40 young football fans have taken to the pitch every week this winter in a series of fun sessions in Haverfordwest.
Now, organisers Sport Pembrokeshire– Pembrokeshire County Council’s sports development arm – hope to extend the scheme with the aim of running sessions in all areas of the County.
“We’re very pleased with the response to these sessions. It shows that there is a huge demand among youngsters to get involved in the game,” said Councillor Huw George, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People.
“Winning youngsters over to sport and club-based activity encourages healthy exercise and good habits from an early age.”
The Fun Football scheme, which has been running in parallel with junior league programmes, aims to encourage youngsters of all abilities to play and enjoy football – particularly those who don’t already play for a team.
Run by FAW qualified coaches, the sessions are open to boys and girls between five and 11, as well as players with disabilities.
The 10-week scheme finishes at the end of March with all football clubs in the Haverfordwest area invited to the final session on 27th March to recruit new players and, possibly, parents and volunteers as well!
Debbie Wise, Sport Pembrokeshire‘s Football Development Officer said the response to the scheme had exceeded expectations.
“It shows that there are many youngsters in Pembrokeshire who want to play football, but are maybe unsure about joining a club or where to look for one.
“We hope the scheme will act as a springboard for youngsters wanting to play the game and are planning to extend it to all parts of the County. We will be looking to support existing clubs, as well as work with those that want to set up a mini team and enter the Pembrokeshire Junior League in forthcoming seasons.”
The Fun Football scheme is sponsored by Chevron with additional funding from the Sports Council for Wales.
Jane James, Policy, Government and Public Affairs Manager for Chevron said, “This scheme is an exciting way of involving young people in football and Chevron is delighted that its sponsorship will make these opportunities more widely available.”
