Rhymney’s recycling centre is to stay open after an appeal to the Plaid-led administration from Independent Twyn Carno councillor Peter Bailie (pictured).
Councillor Colin Mann, Deputy Leader of Caerffili County Borough Council, announced the change of heart at the authority’s budget setting meeting.
Closure of the Lawn Industrial Estate civic amenity site would have saved £70,000 but Councillor Mann said that he had been convinced by Councillor Bailie to support its reprieve.
Councillor Mann said: “We decided not to close the site after Councillor Bailie made strong representations highlighting the potential impact on the area if the site was closed with reference to increased illegal tipping. We have now asked the council’s directorate to look elsewhere for the savings.
“Sadly, we had double standards from the Labour Party. They called for the site to be kept open but then voted against the Plaid budget proposals for 2010-11 . This means that they were actually voting for the site to close. Maybe the Labour councillors from the upper Rhymney Valley were pleased when they lost that vote”.
