Pupils from two Torfaen schools have been learning about the dangers of playing near construction sites.
Considerate Constructors Scheme mascot Ivor GoodSite visited Nant Celyn Primary School in Cwmbran recently, to speak to pupils about site safety.
As the industry mascot, Ivor GoodSite is always dressed appropriately for working on a construction site and gives important safety advice to young people.
The construction of Nant Celyn Primary School, which will accommodate pupils from the merged Brookfield and Hollybush schools, is progressing well and is on target to open in September.
The executive member for children and young people, councillor Mary Barnett, said: “The visit by Ivor GoodSite was great fun and played an important role in reinforcing the message to pupils about how dangerous playing on a building site can be.
“The pupils thoroughly enjoyed Ivor’s visit, as he was entertaining and informative. Ivor clearly made a lasting impression on the pupils about the importance of site safety.”
Construction work on Nant Celyn, which is the first new primary school to be built by Torfaen since its formation in 1996, is progressing well. Once open, it will accommodate 420 pupils.
Councillor Barnett added: “It is great to see the project progressing so rapidly and key milestones being met.
“As a former teacher, I know the impact a school’s physical environment can have on pupils’ attainment levels.
“By offering a technology-rich environment for both teaching and learning, the new school will contribute significantly to raising standards across the curriculum for all its pupils.
“We will to continue to work closely with our contractors and I am confident the school will open this September as planned.”
