With Spring officially in place, and the move to British Summertime less than a week away, Really Welsh have reported that their DaffodilWelsh Daffodils for the first time. business has finally gone National, as Tesco stores right across the UK are taking
“We had sold to a small number of English Spar stores in the past” reports Richard Arnold of Really Welsh, “but the huge volume that has gone out to Tesco regional distribution centers over the weekend is great news for our growers in Wales, and proves that a Welsh Daffodil is as definable as Cornish Pasty”.
The surge in demand comes after the most difficult start to the growing season in 20 years, and the most disruptive in the five year history of Really Welsh.
“Normally we deliver our first flowers during the first week of the year” notes Arnold, “but we were almost five weeks late this year, and missed part of our St David’s day volume, which was supplemented with English daffodils from Cornwall”
Mothering Sunday however saw a Welsh rear-guard action, as early Cornish supplies faded well before Lincolnshire flowers arrived, and Really Welsh enjoyed a great Mother’s Day sale with their 20 daffodil stems retailing at £1, well within range of most pocket money budgets.
Now the battle lines have changed further, and with English stems still late, Really Welsh is gearing up for a big harvest for Palm Sunday, and a good run to Easter.
“Crucially we normally start to run out of good quality flowers in Easter Week” notes Really Welsh grower Nick Reynolds, “however with the season being so late this year Easter supplies will be good, and the need for imports hugely reduced”.
Really Welsh has over 20 million daffodil flowers in the ground in Wales
