As a follow up to the “Save the Vulcan” campaign, Will Downie of Pontcanna, a Vulcan regular spent an hour standing on the empty fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square wearing a “Save the Vulcan” Tee-shirt which he had altered to read “We Saved the Vulcan”.
The Vulcan in Adamsdown, Cardiff was due to be demolished to make way for flats and a car park. After a vigorous campaign by locals the pub has recently won a three year reprieve but could close in 2012. The campaign continues.
The Fourth Plinth
The Fourth Plinth is in the north-west of Trafalgar Square, in central London. Built in 1841, it was originally intended for an equestrian statue but was empty for many years. It is now the location for specially commissioned artworks.
Sculptor Antony Gormley asked for people to the empty Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, a space normally reserved for statues of kings and generals, in an image of themselves, and a representation of the whole of humanity. The event takes place from 6 July to 14 October 2009
