Women born between April 1938 and October 1944 have only a few days left to take advantage of a Government scheme to boost their pensions, according to Cardiff Central’s Liberal Democrat MP, Jenny Willott.
The scheme, which allows women who meet certain criteria to access backdated pension payments, closes on the 5th April meaning quick action is needed.
The criteria women must meet are:
- That they receive a basic state pension of less than £95.25 per week AND
- Have at least one ‘gap’ year in their National Insurance record between 1996/97 and 2001/02 AND
- Reached the pension age of 60 before their husband turned 65
Local MP Jenny Willott, who is also a Member of the House of Commons Work and Pensions Select Committee, is urging everyone who thinks they fall into this category to contact her immediately.
She said:
“It is vital that people who believe they might be eligible contact me as soon as possible. The deadline is the 5th April and the Government won’t offer the same terms in future.
“If you think that a friend or relative might also meet the criteria laid down by the Government I urge you to speak to them today and put them in touch with either my office or the National Insurance Deficiency Notice Helpline.”
