A group of keen Pembrokeshire walkers have set up their own walking club.
Thirty five people representing existing Steps2Health community walking groups met in Haverfordwest last week to form the new club.
The Steps2Health Walking Club aims to improve the health and wellbeing of residents by providing community based led walks.
Although existing Steps2Health community walking groups in Pembrokeshire will continue to hold their own regular walks, the new club’s committee will increasingly play a greater organisational role.
Councillor Sian James, Cabinet Member for Health and Well-being said she was delighted that the project, initially set up by Health Challenge Pembrokeshire, had taken off and was now assured of a long term future.
“Walking is one of the best ways to keep fit and it suits all ages and abilities,” she said. “I wish them every success.”
The Pembrokeshire Steps2Health project was one of 22 schemes in Wales originally started under the Welsh Assembly’s Walking the Way to Health initiative.
Funded by the Sports Council and supported by Health Challenge Pembrokeshire, the County-wide project now has seven local groups including Fishguard, Milford Haven and Tenby.
Walks are suitable for all levels of fitness as participants walk at their own pace.
