Work has begun on transforming Wrexham Museum into a modern state of the art facility. Contractors ISG started work on March 8th, with building work scheduled to last until the end of August. Following that, specialist contractors will move in to create the new exhibition galleries.
The work represents the first of a four-phase project to transform the whole building; this initial phase includes two new galleries on the ground floor, one of which will be devoted to the collections of Amgueddfa Cymru National Museum Wales and the National Library of Wales. Other improvements include a new glass extension on the front of the building which will house a coffee shop and new museum shop.
Lead Member for Culture & Heritage Councillor Bob Dutton OBE said
“I’m excited to see the work finally start on the refurbishment. The changes now underway will result in a significant improvement to the museum and will ensure that many more people will be able to engage with their heritage.”
During the closure period museum staff, including the Archives and Local Studies Centre have transferred to nearby Bersham Heritage Centre. The museum is due to re-open early in 2011. The project has been made possible through a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
