The next phase of the redevelopment of the Gwyn Hall is set to get underway.
Morgan Ashurst has just been appointed as the main building contractor for the project which will see the historic venue redeveloped into a new modern arts and cultural venue, whilst retaining its original facade.
The contractor will be on site later this month to re-locate hoardings around the building. These will be placed half way across Orchard Street to allow the redevelopment work to take place safely. It will mean that there will be restricted access for vehicles in this area whilst the works to the building are carried out. The contractor will meet with local traders nearby to discuss traffic management issues.
A ‘meet the buyer’ event will be held locally where local sub-contractors and suppliers will be able to meet the Morgan Ashurst team and discuss opportunities for work on the Gwyn Hall project or any other project that could provide potential job opportunities. Information on the event will be available shortly and local businesses will be encouraged to attend.
Ali Thomas, Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, said, “I am really pleased that the next phase of this work is about to start. The council made a commitment last year to re-build the Gwyn Hall, which has been at the heart of the local community for many years. Tom Davies, Morgan Ashurst’s operations manager says: “We’re thrilled to be part of this exciting project which will bring this historical landmark back to life. While we will be creating a state-of-the-art centre the rich history of the hall will be retained – including its Grade II listed facade.”
He adds: “We can’t wait to start work and hope the local community will enjoy tracking the project’s progress over the coming months.”
The project has been designed to retain its position as a landmark building in the heart of the town and many of its original features will be retained or restored.
Works will include a major theatre on the ground floor but modern design will include retractable seating and an up-to-date stage,which will enable the venue to be used for a variety of different functions.
A cinema will be included and a range of other facilities will be added including a cafe.
The hall will be designed to be fully inclusive for people of all abilities and ages and will be easy to navigate with technologies employed wherever possible to enhance the experience of audience, performers and staff alike.
The designers are also aiming for a high Energy Performance rating. The building will be highly insulated and secondary glazing applied alongside the re-instated single glazed original windows. Special vents will allow for much of the building to be ventilated reducing the energy consumption and running costs of the building overall.
