A £250,000 highways investment scheme to resurface Aberdare Bypass is close to completion despite the adverse weather which temporarily delayed the work.
The major project, financed by the Heads of the Valley Fund, has totally resurfaced a 1.3km stretch of the A4059 as a matter of urgency.
In order to progress the works Rhondda Cynon Taf Council had no choice but to close the Bypass to resurface the carriageway which suffered serious damage during the recent adverse weather.
The current state of the road was considered a significant danger and the work necessary to ensure the continued safety of its users.
Wherever possible the Bypass has been opened at peak traffic times but as some of the work includes the removal of the base and surface layers in some areas it has not been possible to allow access every day.
Heavy rain has caused some disruption to the team who have worked tirelessly to complete the scheme during the Easter to minimise traffic problems while local schools are on holidays.
The Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Customer Care Cllr Andrew Morgan said “If we had not taken the decision to carry out the work during the Easter holidays, we may have been faced with far greater disruption as the road condition continued to deteriorate.
“This could ultimately have resulted in the total closure of the road. As it is we are working tirelessly to alleviate the queues of traffic by allowing them through during peak times whenever possible
”We are grateful to everyone for their patience as we carry out this work and we hope that with a period of favourable weather ahead of us, the scheme will be completed before the new school term begins.”
