During the coming months, wheelchair users will have a unique opportunity to visit some of north-west Wales’ most striking locations.
Gwynedd Council is supporting a joint-project which has arranged an annual programme of countryside wheelchair walks – again this year the choices of walks will visit some of Wales’ most fantastic locations.
The aim of these guided tours is to give wheelchair users the opportunity to enjoying rural habitats and nature reserves. The walks will be held between April and September 2010. It’s necessary for you to book a place beforehand.
Gwynedd Council will be responsible for leading two walks which will give the chance to enjoy two genuinely unique settings – Ynys Enlli (Bardsey Island) on May 14th and Lôn Goed, near Chwilog on June 18th.
From the safety of the boat, you’ll get the chance see Ynys Enlli in its full glory, and study the rich marine life that surrounds this historical island. Along with hundreds of sea birds nesting on their rugged cliff side colonies, you’ll be able to look out for other wildlife such as dolphins and seals. Marvel at majestic sea caves and listen to tales of old about local mariners and pirates who used to rule the waves around the island.
Lôn Goed is an historical path that was built in the first half of the 19th century to transport goods from the coast to farms in Eifionydd. You can experience the same thrill that motivated the poet R. Williams Parry to write his famous poem of the same name when you enjoy a relaxing walk along the historical tree-lined avenue.
Gwynedd Council’s Senior Countryside Warden, Haydn Hughes, the leader of these walks in Gwynedd and the co-ordinator on behalf of the Council, said: “These walks are great opportunities for people to get put and enjoy the great outdoors and the wonderful locations we have on offer locally.
“I hope that a number of people attend, and make these walks worthwhile, memorable and motivate them to want to experience and see more.”
Wheelchair users are asked to bring at least one relative or friend with them. Officers and volunteers will be available throughout the day to offer assistance.

- 17 July – Morfa Mawddach, Dolgellau
- 1 August – RSPB Conwy
- 25 August – Ynys Llanddwyn, Anglesey
- 1 September – Dinorwig, Llanberis
- 11 September – Holyhead Breakwater Country Park
