Pupils tickle the taste buds

Sixteen primary school pupils donned their aprons recently for Welsh celebrity chef Dudley Newberry.

The youngsters were finalists in a north Pembrokeshire Cook it Challenge.

The cooking competition, held at Ysgol y Preseli, was part of a long running project to encourage healthy eating in schools.

Chef Dudley, who acted as mentor and judge on the day, said he was extremely impressed at the high standard of all the competitors.

Lucy Wilding from Ysgol Y Frenni was the overall winner, while Lucy Hope from Ysgol Eglwyswrw won the competition to design an apron.

Organised by Pembrokehsire County Council’s education department, the Cook it Challenge celebrated five years of the Community Focused Schools Cook it project within the Preseli family of schools.

It also gave pupils the opportunity to work alongside top chefs and food professionals.

Heats were held earlier this year among Year 6 pupils in all schools within the Preseli family of schools.

Pupils were asked to design and make a funky healthy sandwich with finalists chosen by Wayne Delve, winner of S4C’s Tigh Dudley 2009.

For the final itself pupils prepared a three course meal of savoury muffins, a cous cous salad and a smoothie.

Councillor Huw George, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People said it had been a wonderful day for which the youngsters had worked really hard.

“In these days of fast food and ready meals it’s important that children learn how to cook properly and also enjoy preparing food that is healthy and tasty to eat,” he said.

After the competition over 200 parents and members of the local community were treated to a free demonstration from Dudley.
