Flintshire County Council is calling for volunteer groups to help with its successful Big Dee Day coastal clear up event in September.
Organisers have set themselves a target to remove 1,000 bags of marine and coastal litter during the two day event on September 17th and 18th.
Previous Big Dee events in 2007 and 2008 led by the Council’s Coastal Unit cleared over 2,500 bags of litter from the Dee estuary with over 1200 attendees from business, residential and conservation communities. All local authorities bordering on the Dee estuary took part with over 60 organisations adopting sections of coastline to sweep clean of litter for a day.
Flintshire County Council Leader, Councillor Arnold Woolley, has pledged his full support for the event.
“Litter is having a devastating effect on our marine heritage and wildlife. The Big Dee Day is a major conservation event in the North Wales calendar and I hope existing and new volunteers will give it their full support.”
Flintshire’s Countryside Service is looking for groups that would want to adopt a section of coastline at September’s event to register their interest on 01244 814931.
Mike Taylor, Senior Coastal Ranger, said:
“For safety reasons we are looking to groups with dedicated leaders such as schools, cadets, businesses, community, recreational and conservation groups. All those groups who previously took part are also asked to get in touch to confirm interest for 2010. This is a real challenge with a worldwide impact for work on a local level. Companies who may want to offer support by sponsoring groups involved in any way are also asked to get in touch. £250 will kit out a group with gloves, litterpickers and bags. A group of 15 to 20 volunteers can clear over a km in half a day.”
