Crosskeys clean up helps launch Caerphilly StreetPride

A multi-agency environmental improvement day in and around Crosskeys has helped launch a brand new initiative, which aims to encourage communities to work together with the council to take pride in their neighbourhoods.

A wide range of organisations took part in the improvement activity to mark the official launch of ‘Caerphilly StreetPride’, which is a scheme that brings together the services that help keep Caerphilly county borough clean, green and safe, and helps keep our streets and neighbourhoods at a standard that promotes pride and community responsibility.

Work including a river and canal clean up, cleaning up of embankments, chewing gum removal and street washing took place as part of the clean up, and teams also worked to remove unnecessary road signs, make road repairs and paint street furniture such as railings and benches.

Teams also worked to remove dog fouling and litter, and raise awareness of the laws surrounding these environmental issues.

Encouragingly, not only dog droppings were picked up, but also the droppings of an otter, which was proof of otters living on the Ebbw River, and more significantly shows that the quality of our environment is continuing to improve.

The council teams were also joined by the local Probation Service’s Community Payback team, young offenders from the local Youth Offending Service, who helped out in the clean up as part of their community reparation work and local volunteers.

Children from Waunfawr Primary School also got involved by taking part in a supervised litter pick in the grounds of Waunfawr Park, and learned some interesting facts about the local wildlife and countryside.

Caerphilly County Borough
Council’s Community Safety Wardens also carried out high visibility patrols in the area.

Cllr Lyn Ackerman, cabinet member for the environment said, “I am delighted that so many people came along to support the official launch of Caerphilly StreetPride. We want people to be proud of where they live and to work with us to keep our streets and neighbourhoods clean and tidy.

Each of the issues within the remit of Caerphilly StreetPride are already dealt with by the council and its partners on a daily basis, however together as one ‘Caerphilly StreetPride’ team, there is an opportunity for us to enhance what is already being achieved, and provide an even better service to residents and tackle the issues that matter most to them.”
