Cardiff Council’s noise service deals with over 3,000 complaints every year. Over 50 per cent of noise complaints relate to amplified music.
Throughout the year, council noise officers have seized large amounts of stereo equipment and television sets as a result of investigations relating to persistent noise offenders.
As part of Noise Action Week 2010 (April 26 -30), these items have been offered to Cardiff Council’s Youth Service for use in the Council’s youth centres.
Dan Wilson, Youth Community Education Officer said:
“Young people using youth centres across Cardiff will benefit from and enjoy the electrical equipment kindly donated by Pollution Control. It’s not often that there is a positive outcome to anti-social behaviour in communities, and it will be great to see the equipment being used appropriately in dedicated environments for young people.
“The equipment may also be used as a means of discussing the possible consequences of noise pollution and anti-social behaviour with young people attending our centres and promote respect and consideration for neighbours and the wider community.”
Will Lane, Cardiff Council Operational Manager, Environment, said:
“Noise Action Week is an opportunity for all of us to think about the impact of noise that we might generate ourselves and the effect it can have on those around us. With a little care and consideration everyone can help to reduce the impact of noise. Many noise complaints could be avoided with a little consideration for our neighbours.”
During Noise Action Week, everyone is urged to:
- Consider the noise they make and its effect on others
- Consider the noises that disturb them
- Consider how you can prevent unnecessary disturbance
