Blue and black refuse bags are now being delivered to homes across Carmarthenshire.
Each year the council supplies a roll of black bags and two rolls of blue bags to homes on the kerbside recycling scheme.
Residents are given only one roll of 52 black bags to encourage them to reduce waste and recycle as much as they can.
Blue bags are used for recycling paper, cardboard, cans and plastic and if residents run out at any time during the year more will be delivered.
Each roll now has a luminous green and yellow stripe on one of the bags towards the end so that when that particular blue bag is put out for collection the crews know they need to leave more.
The aim is to make it as easy as possible for residents to recycle – around 75,000 households out of approximately 82,000 in Carmarthenshire benefit from kerbside recycling.
The green bin/blue bag scheme which also includes the collection of food waste for composting was launched in February 2008 and has been a huge success with residents now recycling more than 40% of their waste.
However, this figure needs to increase to 52% by 2012-2013. Carmarthenshire will also face large fines if reductions in landfill do not meet targets.
Head of Street Scene David Hughes said: “Bags are now being delivered to households across Carmarthenshire, however I would ask residents to be patient if they haven’t received any yet as it will take a couple of weeks to get round all areas.
“We want to make it as easy as possible for residents to recycle, there is no limit as to how many blue bags householders can put out for collection and as they get to the end of a roll more will be delivered by the crews.”
