A third of the post office network has closed in Wales since 1999, figures obtained by the Welsh Conservatives reveal today.
In the last 11 years 351 rural branches have shut, robbing communities of vital services.
Commenting on the figures, Shadow Secretary of State for Wales Cheryl Gillan said:
“The loss of a post office has a major impact on local communities and robs them of vital services.
“Over the last decade Labour has simply stood by and let it happen – all in the name of so-called modernisation.
“Conservatives will stop the closure of any profitable Post Office and allow branches to offer a wider range of services. This will include reform of the Post Office Card Account to help with utility bills.
“Labour has had 13 years to reform the Post Office, but has allowed it to fall into decline. The Post Office cannot afford five more years of Gordon Brown.”
