Llanystumdwy will be a hive of activity on Saturday, 8 May as it celebrates Lloyd George Day.
With activities for the whole family at the Lloyd George Museum and Tŷ Newydd throughout the day, there will be a special opportunity to enjoy the highlights of the museum, stepping back in time with storyteller Mair Tomos Ifans, various workshops in Tŷ Newydd in the company of Twm Morys and Francesca Kay.
Nest Thomas, Gwynedd Council’s Museums and Galleries Officer said: “The open day will be a great opportunity to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the opening of the present museum, as well as marking 21 years since Tŷ Newydd opened as a literature centre.
“There are a whole host of various activities arranged for the open day and we hope to see a number of families coming along. If you haven’t visited the museum or Tŷ Newydd before – this is your chance.”
From 1pm to 1.30pm there will be a chance to join in with the celebrations, as David Lloyd George’s grandson, D L Carey Evans cuts a cake to celebrate half a century since the present museum opened. A special exhibition has also been arranged at Ysgol Llanystumdwy, telling the story of the village since Lloyd George’s period – the exhibition will be open from 11am until 12.30pm.
There is also some anticipation after the family presented a unique diary from the 1880s which belonged to Uncle Lloyd, David Lloyd George’s uncle and a man who had significant influence on the early years of the Prime Minister during his years in Llanystumdwy.
Nest Thomas from Gwynedd Council added: “We are really looking forward to hearing some extracts from Uncle Lloyd’s diary and we are particularly grateful to the family for their support.
“This is an important historical finding which will certainly be of interest to anyone who takes an interest in the history of David Lloyd George and his roots in Llanystumdwy.”
