Matthew Silva’s dream start as head coach of Rumney continued with an stylish victory over Beddau that sent the Cardiff club top of Division One East.
The former Wales Youth and Wales rugby league full-back returned to his old stomping ground in the summer to take over the top job and has had an immediate impact.
Rumney are not only unbeaten from their opening three games of the campaign but have taken bonus points from each of their wins to secure a maximum haul.
“We’ve had the bulk of this team together since the junior grades but they are really coming of age under Matthew. He’s has had a real impact on the boys and has got them playing a great style of rugby,” said Rumney committee member Danny Griffiths. “We’ve been scoring tries in every game but it’s the pack who have been doing all the work. It’s going to take a top side to get the better of us and we’re already looking at what we could achieve this season.”
The latest bonus-point victory came courtesy of another awesome display from the pack who combined for three of the team’s four tries at Beddau. No8 Mike Kelly barged over twice while their dominance in the scrum earned a penalty try after wing Lincoln Plummer had scorched over. Outside-half Danny Clarke added four kicks with the boot.
Rumney are a point ahead of UWIC who had to work hard to maintain their unbeaten start before edging out Blackwood 16-10 in Cyncoed while Llanharan also have a 100 per cent record following a 35-21 win against Bargoed. Neil Dallymore, Paul Adams, Gareth Edwards and Glen Slater all went over for the Drovers.
A hat-trick by Viv Jenkins sent Carmarthen Quins to the top of Division One West, two points clear of Felinfoel. Wing Jenkins proved too hot for Narberth to handle as he completed a stunning treble after captain Lee Bassett had also scored. Fly-half Mark Jones added 11 points with the boot while Tom Bonnell crossed for Narberth.
Felinfoel piled more misery upon fallen giants Bridgend by snatching a dramatic last-gasp victory at home to the Ravens, despite being out-scored four tries to two. Bridgend led until the 78th-minute following tries from Gareth Howells, skipper Matthew Davies, Ricky Williams and Tom Daly. But they failed to shake off a Felinfoel side playing with real confidence and after prop Rowan Jenkins and replacement scrum-half Luke Marsh touched down, full-back Jason Davies kicked the late winner.
Meanwhile there were narrow away wins for Tonmawr at Whitland 12-6, Cwmllynfell against Llangennech 22-20 and Corus at Bridgend Athletic, 24-20.
