Young dancers from across Pembrokeshire took to the dance floor at the weekend for the third annual 5×60 Inter School Dance competition.
Over 60 pupils from six county secondary school strutted their stuff at Haverfordwest Leisure Centre’s dance studio.
Pupils from Ysgol Bro Gwaun in Fishguard, Sir Thomas Picton, Tasker Milward, Greenhill & Ysgol y Preseli competed in two categories – quad groups and team – with dancers from Sir Thomas Picton winning both classes.
Organised by Sport Pembrokeshire – the sports development arm of Pembrokeshire County Council – the 5×60 project aims to encourage secondary school pupils to take part in extra curricular activities, while getting fit at the same time.
Councillor Rob Lewis, Cabinet member for Sport and Leisure sad that as part of the project school dance clubs had now been set up in most of the county’s secondary schools.
“The introduction of activities such as street dance and cheerleading symbolises the change that we are trying to effect in secondary school sport,” he said.
“The classes are extremely popular as shown by the turn out at Sunday’s competition.”
Russell Jones, 5×60 Manager for Sport Pembrokeshire said dance engaged large number of girls and boys in healthy exercise – many of whom would not normally take part in sport.
“The standard at the competition was very high and contestants and spectators thoroughly enjoyed themselves,” he said.
The competition judges were Laura Harvey, Dance Co-ordinator for Arts Care Gofal Celf; Natalie Warren, Dance Instructor and Ben Field of Sport Pembrokeshire.
