Golfers take a swing for charity

Golfers certainly got into the swing of things during the recent Mayor’s Charity Tournament.

Players from across Rhondda Cynon Taf gathered in order to enjoy a great day of golf, with extra competitions and prizes, while also raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support, Help for Heroes and Diabetes UK (Cymru).

As well as being a hit for charity, the competition at Aberdare Golf Club also saw a first in the history of the event – a hole-in-one! Organisers rushed out to get a special prize for Stuart Small after he hit the ball into the hole on the first hit.

As well as unexpected prizes, the pairs competition saw prizes for first, second and third place. These were awarded to Gareth Hughes and Gareth Lewis, Stephen Morgan and Lee Foulkes and Neil Fox and Arthur Chapman respectively.

Gareth Hughes also secured a prize for being nearest the pin and the award for longest drive was awarded to Neil Fox. The two ball sweep was won by Phil Cowell, Jamie Evans, Jon Bolter, Daniel Hutchins, Gareth Middleton, Gary David, Mal Pugh, Stephen Morgan, Gareth Hughes and Phil Baker.

However, the biggest winners were the three charities that will benefit from the event, as an impressive £1,000 was raised!

Mayor Cllr Robert Smith, said: “The Mayor’s Charity Golf Tournament was a great day, thanks to those who helped to organise the day and, of course, the players who showed their support.

“I am really pleased that they had such a good day among the excellent facilities at Aberdare Golf Course and I thank them for helping us with the Mayor’s Charity Appeal.”
