Younger residents enjoy safety lesson

Rhondda Cynon Taf’s youngest residents have enjoyed an early lesson in staying safe.

Tots from playgroups in Gilfach Goch visited the Safety Zone in Treforest recently for a tailor-made session with the Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Road Safety Team.

They learned about the importance of holding hands when crossing the road, the “stop, look and listen” message and how to find safe places to cross.

Road safety experts also spoke to them about using car seats and seatbelts and to ensure they are safe and seen when walking about, using bright or reflective clothing.

At the end of the session, the children were given road safety booklets and goodies to take back to their respective Tumble Tots and Flying Start/Action for Children playgroups.

Cllr Andrew Morgan, Cabinet Member for Customer Care and Transport, said: “The Safety Zone is an excellent venue of which we are really proud as it allows us to teach road safety in a realistic environment.

“The zone has a reality street where we can show the children the importance of safe crossing places and following the green cross code.

“Importantly, it allows the learning to be fun, so we can reach out to children of all ages and interests, including those who are very young and attend playgroups, and ensure the information we give them is relevant.”
